Dear Municipal officials/ Residents,

Welcome to the Town of North Hempstead’s Office of Intermunicipal Coordination website. In the beginning of 2006 I established the Town’s Office of Intermunicipal Coordination (the OIC). This office has proven itself to be an invaluable asset in improving the way governments and municipal corporations work together to provide the highest level of services, at reduced costs, for the benefit of the taxpayers.

Within the borders of the Town of North Hempstead there are 31 Incorporated Villages and over 50 Special Districts, more than any other town in New York State. Each year the Town of North Hempstead alone approves 45 special district budgets.

The Town currently has 57 Intermunicipal Agreements (IMA’s) in place. These IMA’s are with various municipal entities, including Nassau County, Incorporated Villages, Water, Fire, Police, Garbage, Park, Library, and Water Pollution Control Districts. Through these agreements we have been able to provide services to municipalities in a variety of ways. For example, in 2008 alone the Town provided services such as road and sidewalk re-paving, street sweeping and tree trimming. Villages such as Williston Park have taken advantage of our Reverse 311 system as a way to notify its residents of meeting dates and emergency notifications such as road closures. The Town also has IMA’s with a number of Villages and Districts for fuel and salt dispensing.

The Town of North Hempstead is proud to take the lead on these and other Intermunicipal initiatives. We expect the OIC to continue to grow to meet the needs of municipalities within and beyond the borders of North Hempstead. By partnering with our neighboring municipalities and special districts we will continue to provide our residents with the level of service they expect, and deserve from their local government.

The OIC is an example of how local government works better when it forms partnerships with one another. This website will serve as the next step in the Town of North Hempstead’s continuing effort to help all the municipal entities that lie within our township work effectively and efficiently with each other to best serve our residents' needs.

Thank you,

Jon Kaiman
